Winter Hibernation Ends Soon

Friends,

We're going to be playing--yes, an actual live performance--at Jeffries Landing in Bridgewater, PA, which is close to Beaver, PA. The show is on March 21 and will start at 9:30.

Then on April 3 and April 5, Fred Chapellier is coming to the U.S. to play shows with us at the Berks Jazz Fest in Reading, PA on Friday, April 3 and in McKeesport, PA, near Pittsburgh, at the Palisades Ballroom on Sunday, April 5.

The show at the Palisades is our official release party for our CD, Night Work. My old pal Robert Peckman, a great Bonedog Records recording artist, will also be performing. Tickets are $12 in advance--call Bonedog Records at 412-678-3955--or $15 at the door. Doors open at 7:00, and the show is at 8:00. Be there!

We're working on more dates for the coming year, so please check in every now and then to the schedule page on our website.

Advance reviews of Night Work

The official release date of our new CD with Fred Chapellier, Night Work (DixieFrog Records) is March 12. Fred sent me a review of the CD at Mac & Guitare at http://www.macdan.org/spip.php?article1883. My French isn't too good, but I can tell that the writer likes it!

Another advance review is in Jim White's blog at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette at http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/bluenotes/archive/2009/01/13/sneak-preview-of-billy-price-s-new-cd-night-work.aspx.

Night Work

My new CD, Night Work, with the great French blues guitarist Fred Chapellier, will be released in Europe in March on DixieFrog Records. There's a good chance that it will be available on our website before the official release.

Here's some video from the recording sessions that the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review posted, along with this article. And check this sneak preview of the CD by Jim White on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette BlueNotes blog. You can hear some of the songs from the CD on the Billy Price/Fred Chapéllier myspace page.

To support the release of the new CD, Fred will travel to the U.S., where he and the Billy Price Band will perform at the 19th Annual VF Outlet Berks Jazz Fest in Reading, PA on Friday, April 3. He'll also be with us at a CD Release Party at the Palisades Ballroom in McKeesport, PA on Sunday, April 5. Last March, we played at the Palisades with the great Otis Clay, and we're working on getting Otis to come to Pittsburgh to join us again for the release party. Then in May, I'm going to France to do a two-week tour with Fred and his fine band. Dates for the tour are on the website schedule page.

I expect that fans of my work with Roy Buchanan are going to love Night Work. Roy is one of Fred's biggest influences as a guitarist; in fact, Fred's last CD for DixieFrog was titled A Tribute to Roy Buchanan.

More About Night Work

Mark Wenner, harmonica player of the Nighthawks, plays on three songs--the title song, written by our friend Mike Sweeney from Pittsburgh; a new version of "Who You're Working For," which I recorded with Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band on the Free at Last CD in 1988; and a new song written by me, Sweeney, Sally Tiven, and Jon Tiven titled "The Wrong Woman." Also making a guest appearance on the new CD, singing Al Green's "Love and Happiness," is Otis Clay.

Here's a youtube video of Otis singing the track in the studio. (Thanks, Jimmy.)

Fred and I wrote six songs for the new CD, BP Band keyboard player Jimmy Britton and I wrote one, and Sweeney contributed a great tribute to O.V. Wright. Speaking of O.V. Wright, no Billy Price CD would be complete without at least one O.V. Wright cover. This time, it's "Don't Let My Baby Ride."

The CD is a true international collaboration. The Billy Price Band play on most of the tracks, but Fred's great band--Abder Benachour on bass, Pat Machenaud on drums, and Damien Cornelis on keyboards--play on three songs, with horns overdubbed by the Billy Price Band horn section.

For the latest information about the CD and upcoming tours, bookmark the Billy Price/Fred Chapéllier myspace page and stop by when you can.

Latest News Linkfest

Fred Chapellier, both of our bands, Jeff Ingersoll over at Bonedog Records and I are now hard at work on our new CD for DixieFrog Records, tentatively titled "Night Work." We've finished all the rhythm tracks and are now working on horn parts, final vocals, and overdubs including, we hope, cameo appearances from Mark Wenner, harp player of the Nighthawks, and Otis Clay. Here's an article from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and a youtube video feature about the new CD and recording sessions. There are a couple of good photos here from our gig at the Syria Mosque in Harmar Township when Fred was in Pittsburgh. And please stop by our new Billy Price/Fred Chapéllier myspace page.

I'm back in Pittsburgh now from my second trip to France of the summer. My first trip, along with BP Band keyboard player Jimmy Britton, was a five-day gig with Fred and his great band at the Jazz Club Lionel Hampton in the Meridién Hotel in Paris (photos here). In my second trip, I played seven gigs in nine days with Fred, his band, and Neal Black. Here are some photos from one of our gigs, at the Pop Art Café in Reims.

Meanwhile, great stuff keeps showing up on youtube that surprises and delights me. Here's a video of Billy Price & the Keystone Rhythm Band performing in 1985 at High on the Hog, the annual party and music festival on Libby Hill in Richmond, VA. The song, "I'm Ready," is one that I had completely forgotten about. If I'm not mistaken, I think I wrote it with Norman Nardini. And here I am accepting an award for Best R&B/Blues Band on TV in Pittsburgh in 1989, at the Pittsburgh Music Awards. 1989 was the same year, by the way, in which Billy Price & the KRB broke up; always best to go out when you're on top, I guess.

Speaking of the Nighthawks, Jimmy and I are again planning some end-of-the-year dates with the lads (see our schedule for full details). Here are some photos from our gig last year at the Fish Head Cantina for the Baltimore Blues Society.

Hope you enjoy all of this stuff. If you do, leave a comment for us!
